Memorial Day Ceremony

Rocky Versace Memorial

The “Friends of Rocky Versace” will host the 11th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony in Alexandria on Monday, 27 May 2013 beginning at 11:00 AM.  The approximately 1-hour Ceremony will honor posthumous Medal of Honor recipient and Distinguished Member of the Special Forces Regiment CPT Rocky Versace, 3 other 5 Alexandrians who died during the Vietnam War and all those in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice. Location is the Capt. Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial; Mount Vernon Recreation Center in the City of Alexandria, 2701 Commonwealth Ave. (intersection of Commonwealth and Mt Vernon Aves.).

63 other items on display at the Versace Plaza include:

1. Autographed copy of Five Years to Freedom
2. Special Forces Green Beret presented by MG Ken Bowra (CG, JFKSWCS)
3. Medal of Honor

Who – Special Forces Troopers, family and friends
What – Memorial Day Ceremony
When – Monday, 27 May, 11 AM
Where – CPT Rocky Versace Plaza / Mt Vernon Recreation Center
2701 Commonwealth Ave
Alexandria, 22305

Why – To honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice

Capt. Versace was captured and taken to a prison deep in the jungle along with two other Americans, Lieutenant Nick Rowe and Sergeant Dan Pitzer. He tried to escape four times, but failed in his attempts. Versace insulted the Viet Cong during the indoctrination sessions and cited the Geneva Convention treaty time after time. The Viet Cong separated Versace from the other prisoners. The last time the prisoners heard his voice, he was loudly singing “God Bless America”. On September 26, 1965, North Vietnam’s “Liberation Radio” announced the execution of Captain Humbert Roque Versace. Versace’s remains have never been recovered. His headstone at Arlington National Cemetery stands above an empty grave and can be located in the Memorial section MG-108.

Seeking Memorial Day Run Donations

The 4th Battalion, deployed to Afghanistan as Special Operations Task Force – East for most of 2012, is honored to participate as well as take the lead in organizing and executing the 1st Annual 3d Special Forces Group (Airborne) 5K Memorial Run. Our Soldiers and family members have joined forces to honor and remember our fallen at this event. The run will serve as a kick-off to a week filled with events to honor and remember those we have lost. Our collective efforts also have a secondary but important purpose, which is to raise funds to support the SOF Warrior Foundation, an organization dedicated to causes within our Special Operations community.

Capitol Hill Mixer & Joint Networking Event

February Mixer

Last night, Special Forces Association Chapter 105 held its first meeting and networking event of 2013.  The event was held at the National Republican Club of Capital Hill.  We were joined by members of the Navy UDT/SEAL Association, SOCOM, the Air Force and other organizations.

We were honored to be joined by Republican Representative Rob Wittman. Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he is the Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. The Congressman spoke briefly on upcoming events that affect the Special Operations Community.

Merry Christmas

Jeff wins Cookoff

On December 9th, the Chapter President, Mr. Lou Hoffman hosted the annual Chapter CV Holiday Party which began at 1300 hours.

All members were welcome with family and friends. Food and beverages were provided compliments of the Hoffman’s (Lou and Kathy) and everyone brought a favorite dish and/or beverage to share.

The Hoffman’s watch the NFL Red Zone every Sunday and catch “all” the early and late games around the NFL, so no key plays were missed (accept when RGIII got hurt).

Chapter Treasurer Mr. Jeff Kale and Chapter Secretary Mr. Kalani Matthews challenged one another to a barbecue cook-off. Each will brought their specialty barbecue & smoked pork dishes for the guests to sample and judge. All were welcome to bring a dish and enter the competition, but no other guests rose to the challenge.

Jeff brought his home made pulled pork sandwiches with his secret recipe bbq sauce and sweet corn dip.  Kalani brought his island style smoked pulled pork with home made macaroni salad.

Some judged it to be close, but Jeff won hands down with a juicier pork, outstanding bbq sauce and an incredibly delicious corn dish.
